April ~ Parish Health Happenings

Parish Health Happenings- April Rumor has it that the US Senate recently passed a bill that would make Daylight Savings time permanent. The Sunshine Protection Act, aimed at making the most recent time change in effect all 12 months of the year, is a bill I can definitely get behind. As an early riser, the most recent time change proved to be more of an adjustment than in previous years. Maybe it’s my creeping half century birthday just a few short months away, or perhaps it is trying to structure my morning a bit differently so that there is more time for silence and prayer (Some days I definitely ride the struggle bus of stillness and silence…). Whatever it is, I won’t be sad to see the elimination of time changes in the spring and fall.

Some days, my early morning routine includes going for a run before beginning my work day. Having done this for years, I was thrilled to be invited to work with the committee developing the Alumni Iggy 5K Run, Walk and Kid Dash, scheduled to take place on October 1st of this year. The inaugural 5k will be a celebration of the school’s 75th anniversary and will hopefully be an annual event for the school, parish and surrounding community. Please save the date, as we are working hard to make this event fun for all, from the spectator and recreational walker to the competitive runner. We will continue to share details via all of our media outlets and bulletins as they emerge. You will not want to miss this wonderful celebration!

Our community of “fasters” has grown and I am pleased to say, it has even reached the diocese of Covington, with some of the office employees joining us and launching their own efforts.

What a blessing it has been to hear some of the fruits that have developed in just a short time from combining fasting with prayer! This somewhat forgotten, yet necessary practice of our Catholic faith, has incredible power to transform lives and elevate our prayer requests in unimaginable ways. If you would like to try fasting and would like support and prayers, it is not too late to join. Many of us look forward to continuing our fasting through the remainder of Lent and beyond. Following the suggestion of fellow parishioner, a calendar is being developed which will allow parishioners to go online and sign up (weekly, monthly or whenever) and offer a day of fasting and prayer for the war in Ukraine. Please prayerfully consider signing up and offering a day toward this effort.

Our blood pressure Sunday will take place on the weekend of April 23rd and 24th after all masses. This simple screening, which takes a couple of minutes, could help save a life!

Finally, a huge THANK YOU to all who have responded to my request for help within the community. Our lives are often so busy during the work week and the thought of adding “one more thing” can be pretty overwhelming and for some, simply not possible. Please accept my sincere gratitude to all who have offered help as their time permits.

May God bless you and keep you safe as we reflect on the passion and death of our Lord and journey toward His resurrection.
