Plenary Indulgence during the Year of St. Joseph

RECEIVE PLENARY INDULGENCE DURING THE YEAR OF ST. JOSEPH

Archbishop Schnurr has designated the following parishes to serve as temporary shrines during the Year of St. Joseph: St. Joseph, North Bend; St. Joseph, Dayton; and St. Joseph, Wapakoneta. A pious visit to one of these churches during this holy year is an occasion for receiving a plenary indulgence for those who recite an Our Father and the Creed, along with fulfillment of the other requirements for obtaining an indulgence (prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father, sacramental confession, and reception of Holy Communion). Please visit the parishes’ websites to see church visiting hours and any possible devotional activities: www.stjosephnorthbend.com; www.st joseph.com ayton.org;www.petersburgparishes.org (Wapakoneta).

Indulgence explained – CLICK HERE
Adapted from the Vatican website, but also includes important information on the three usual conditions to receive a plenary indulgence.

    1. “As the Catechism says, ‘An indulgence is the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sin whose guilt has already been forgiven.” (CCC 1471) In other words, an indulgence is not about forgiveness of sins – sins confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation have already been forgiven! Rather, an indulgence removes the punishment, purging, or spiritual cleansing that occurs in Purgatory in order to prepare us to see God face to face in Heaven. An indulgence is partial if it removes part of the temporal punishment due to sin, or plenary if it removes all punishment.

    2. Three usual conditions to receive a plenary indulgence:

      1. Sacramental Confession within 20 days before or after the day the indulgence is sought.

      2. Reception of Holy Communion on the day the indulgence is sought.

      3. Prayer for the Pope’s needs and intentions on the day the indulgence is sought (usually understood to mean an Our Father & Hail Mary, or the Creed).

    3. See website above for prayers or works to do, in addition to the three usual conditions in order to receive a plenary indulgence for yourself or another person.
